What do you get from an AI image detector tool?
An AI image detector helps you look beyond whether an image appears realistic. When you run an AI image check with Diopter, you get results supported by signals.
Verdict: See whether the image is Likely Synthetic or Real (no AI).
Confidence and detection score: See how strongly the detected signals support the result.
Suspect region: See where potential manipulation or synthetic signals were found.
Detailed report: Review the analysis and individual signals when you need more context.
What does the confidence score mean?
The confidence score indicates how strongly the available signals point toward a synthetic image. It gives additional context when an image needs closer review.
A result with 80% confidence or higher is recommended for a hold and further action, whereas results between 50% and 79% are recommended for review.
A Real (no AI) result indicates that no synthetic media was detected in the submitted image.
What does an AI image detector look for?
AI-generated images can look convincing while still containing technical signals that are difficult to identify by simply looking at the image. An AI photo detector can examine these signals in more detail.
Diopter analyzes characteristics such as pixel-level artifacts, compression inconsistencies, manipulation boundaries and other patterns associated with synthetic image generation. It also checks for generator fingerprints that can indicate whether the image was created through a known AI image-generation system.
How AI image detection works
Diopter checks your image across three simple steps:
File upload
Add a JPG, PNG or WEBP image of up to 200 MB. The image is submitted securely for analysis.
Signal analysis
Diopter looks at different parts of the image for evidence associated with AI generation or manipulation.
- Pixel
- Examines pixel-level artifacts and compression inconsistencies that can reveal AI generation.
- Regional
- Looks for suspect areas and manipulation boundaries that may indicate that only part of an image has been altered.
- Generator
- Checks for fingerprints associated with known AI image-generation systems, including Midjourney, DALL-E, Stable Diffusion and other models.
Get verdict
You receive a verdict, confidence score, detection details and a view of the suspect regions identified during the analysis.
AI image generator models covered by the detector
Different image generators leave different patterns, and new patterns may also appear. Diopter's AI-generated image detector is trained against outputs from popular image-generation systems and updated as the technology changes.
Our current coverage includes Midjourney, DALL-E and Stable Diffusion, along with other models.
When should you run an AI image check?
You can use an AI-generated photo detector tool when an image is being used to establish identity, support a claim or influence business decisions.
KYC and onboarding
Banks and financial institutions can use AI-generated image detection to check identity-document images during onboarding.
Profile pictures and online identities
Check suspicious profile photos that may have been generated or altered to create a false identity.
Product listings and refunds for e-commerce
E-commerce teams can check product images when a listing, damage claim or visual representation appears suspicious.
Legal investigations
Legal, compliance and investigation teams can detect AI-generated images before using them as evidence.
News and media
Check submitted photographs or visual evidence before publishing sensitive reports.
Why is AI image detection useful for businesses?
An image can support a claim, establish an identity or influence a transaction. When that image has been generated or altered, relying on visual inspection alone can make verification difficult.
Imposter scams alone cost consumers $2.95 billion in 2024, according to the FTC, and convincing images make those scams easier to run. That makes it important for teams to assess the visual evidence behind suspicious profiles, listings and claims.
Why use the Diopter AI image detector
The Diopter AI image detector combines fast analysis with evidence that helps teams understand what the result means.
Results are returned in under 60 seconds, and your first detection is free with no sign-up required.
The detector examines pixel-level artifacts, compression inconsistencies, suspect regions and generator fingerprints to identify signals associated with AI-generated or manipulated images.

Yes. Teams can use it as an additional check for identity documents and other visual material used during onboarding or verification.
A low-confidence score should be treated as a signal for additional review. A confidence score of 50% to 79% warrants a review, while 80% and above warrants a hold.
